Naruto: Shadow Rising Is Kishimoto's First New Naruto Series in 12 Years. Here's Everything Revealed So Far

Masashi Kishimoto is drawing Naruto again. Naruto: Shadow Rising, announced at New York Comic Con on 10 October 2026, is his first new Naruto series since the original ended in November 2014 (the 2023 Minato one-shot was a single chapter). Reports from the panel put it in the years right after the Fourth Great Ninja War, when Kakashi was Hokage and Naruto wasn’t yet. Alongside it: a four-episode Naruto × Ninku crossover anime, a three-year roadmap to the anime’s 25th anniversary, and a date for the real details, Jump Festa on 19 and 20 December. Here’s everything that’s actually been revealed, and what’s still rumour. Last checked on 19 October 2026.

The Naruto panel was billed as “NARUTO: What’s Next?” and it had a title card nobody expected. Not a remake, not a Boruto season, not another Minato one-shot. A new series, by Kishimoto, in the original timeline.

The internet filled in the rest within the hour. Below is the line between what was shown and what was guessed.

What Shadow Rising is

A new Naruto manga, written and drawn by Masashi Kishimoto. That’s the whole official description. The official site’s roundup says the teaser PV showed the Seventh Hokage’s stone face under construction and Team 7 in various scenes, and that more will be shared at Jump Festa 2027.

The setting that’s being reported, in coverage from the panel, is the gap fans have wanted for a decade: after the war, with Kakashi as the Sixth Hokage, before Naruto takes the hat and before The Last. Sasuke travelling alone. Sakura with a newborn Sarada, which means the story covers years, not weeks. A third Naruto-versus-Sasuke clash, serious or sparring, nobody knows.

Worth being honest about the sourcing: the stone face and the Team 7 scenes are in the official text. The “after the war, Kakashi era” framing is the panel’s own description as relayed by press, and everything about the clash is a reading of a few seconds of rough pages. Kishimoto has a habit of teasing fights that turn out to be training.

The teaser, frame by frame

The PV is storyboard-rough rather than finished animation, which fits a manga announcement: it’s a teaser for pages, not for a show. Four things are in it.

Rough storyboard from the Naruto: Shadow Rising teaser showing two figures clashing mid-air
From the teaser PV: the clash, in rough storyboard form.
  1. The Hokage Rock, with a seventh face being carved. The village knows who’s next. That’s the timeframe in one image.
  2. Adult Team 7, each in their post-war place: Naruto holding the Hokage hat rather than wearing it, Kakashi smiling, Sasuke on the road in the rain, Sakura cradling Sarada.
  3. A clash between two figures that every outlet has read as Naruto and Sasuke. The frame above is that moment.
  4. The title card, red brush lettering over the familiar logo, and the line “more information at Jump Festa 2027”.

No format was given. It could be a full weekly serialisation, a limited run, or a long one-shot like 2023’s Minato story, and the roadmap below is the only hint either way.

The three-year roadmap

The panel also unveiled “Project Rasengan”, a roadmap running from 2027 to 2029, pointed at the anime’s 25th anniversary in 2027. Four slots are filled and four are blank with “to be continued” on them.

The official roadmap. Four announced, four still covered.
  • New TV anime limited series: that’s Naruto × Ninku.
  • Trading card game, June 2027.
  • Mobile game world launch: Naruto Mobile, the competitive action game that has been China-only since 2016, going worldwide. Date to be announced.
  • New manga by Kishimoto: Shadow Rising.

The four blank slots are where the speculation lives. An anime adaptation of Shadow Rising would be the obvious candidate for one of them, and the 2029 end of the window is the earliest anyone sensible is guessing.

Separately, the live-action Hollywood film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is described as cast and in production.

Naruto × Ninku, and the series behind it

The anime announcement is the one with the better story. Naruto × Ninku is a four-episode crossover: Team 7 lost in another world, meeting Fusuke, the frog-faced boy from Ninku. Kishimoto and Ninku’s creator Koji Kiriyama both supervise.

Kishimoto’s own sketch for the announcement: Fusuke and Naruto.

If you don’t know Ninku, you’re in the majority outside Japan, and there’s a reason. It ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1993 to 1995, nine volumes, and got a 55-episode anime from Pierrot in 1995. Kishimoto has said he copied Kiriyama’s drawings as a student, that he started Naruto because he wanted to see Ninku continue, and at the panel he said it outright: “without Ninku, Naruto wouldn’t exist”. Fusuke is a wind-user with a cap and an outsized grin, and if you squint at the sketch above you can see where the kid in orange came from.

And it has never been released in English. Not the manga, not the TV anime; a 26-minute film got an English VHS in 1998 and that’s the whole catalogue. When the crossover airs, the question “what is Ninku, and where do I read it?” has only one honest answer: the Japanese volumes, which are on Shonen Jump+ and BookWalker, and a translator that reads them as you scroll.

Our guide to the Japanese publisher platforms covers how Jump+ and BookWalker work from outside Japan, and the step-by-step on translating Japanese manga is the five-minute setup.

What happened to the 20th anniversary anime

Quietly, the other news from the panel is a cancellation. In 2022, for the anime’s 20th anniversary, Pierrot announced four new episodes set in Part 1, with Team 7 on a new mission. They slipped from 2023 into an indefinite delay. According to Game Rant’s account of the panel, the production committee wasn’t satisfied with the result, shelved it, and the Naruto × Ninku crossover was built in its place with Kishimoto’s input. The official roundup doesn’t mention the old special at all, which tells the same story more politely.

What’s still unknown

  • Format and length of Shadow Rising: weekly, limited, or one-shot.
  • Where it runs. Weekly Shonen Jump is the assumption; Kishimoto’s Minato one-shot ran there in 2023. Not confirmed.
  • Start date. Jump Festa is the stated venue for it.
  • English release. A Jump serialisation would almost certainly mean a same-day chapter on MANGA Plus and the Shonen Jump app, as the Minato one-shot had. Also not confirmed.
  • Air date for Naruto × Ninku, and which four episodes’ worth of story it covers.

Where to read while you wait

Naruto itself is complete in English: 72 volumes from Viz, all of it on MANGA Plus, and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex continues monthly with a same-day English chapter. If you want to be ready for Shadow Rising’s timeframe, the last ten volumes of the original and the Kakashi Hiden and Sakura Hiden novels cover the Kakashi years directly.

Ninku is the one you’ll have to translate yourself. Nine volumes, and the crossover will make a lot of people want to. Madomi is how we’d do it: buy the volumes, open them in the reader, and let it overlay the English.

Frequently asked questions

What is Naruto: Shadow Rising?

A new Naruto manga written and drawn by Masashi Kishimoto, announced at New York Comic Con on 10 October 2026. It’s his first new Naruto series since the original ended in November 2014; his only Naruto manga since then was the 2023 Minato one-shot. Reports from the panel place it directly after the Fourth Great Ninja War, in the years when Kakashi was Hokage and before Naruto took the hat. Format, magazine and start date haven’t been announced; those come at Jump Festa 2027 on 19 and 20 December 2026.

When does Naruto: Shadow Rising come out?

No date yet. Shueisha has said more information will be revealed at Jump Festa 2027 on 19 and 20 December 2026, at the Naruto Super Stage. The Project Rasengan roadmap places the new manga inside a 2027 to 2029 window, so a 2027 start is the reasonable guess, but nothing has been confirmed.

What did the Shadow Rising teaser show?

A short PV of rough storyboards: the Hokage stone faces over the village with the Seventh’s still under construction, the adult Team 7 (Naruto with the Hokage hat, Kakashi, Sasuke on his travels, Sakura holding a baby Sarada) and a final clash between Naruto and Sasuke. The official site describes the stone-face shot and the Team 7 scenes; the clash is what the rough pages show.

What is Naruto × Ninku?

A four-episode anime crossover announced at the same panel, supervised by Kishimoto and Ninku creator Koji Kiriyama. Team 7 gets lost in another world and meets Fusuke, Ninku’s frog-faced hero. Ninku is the 1993 Weekly Shonen Jump manga Kishimoto has called the reason Naruto exists. No air date yet; details also come at Jump Festa.

What happened to the 20th anniversary Naruto anime?

The four-episode special announced in 2022 for the anime’s 20th anniversary is reportedly cancelled. According to coverage of the panel, the production committee wasn’t satisfied with it, shelved it, and the Naruto × Ninku crossover was built in its place with Kishimoto’s input.

Where can I read Naruto and Ninku in English?

Naruto is complete in English from Viz Media, and MANGA Plus carries it. Ninku has never been published in English; the manga is only available in Japanese, on Shonen Jump+ and BookWalker. To read it before the crossover airs, Madomi by Pawaka Labs translates each page as you scroll.

Two months to Jump Festa

That’s the honest state of it: one title, one timeframe, one roadmap, and a date. We’ll update this post when Jump Festa fills in the rest. In the meantime, the series Kishimoto says made Naruto possible is nine volumes long and sitting on Jump+ right now.
