The Summer Hikaru Died Manga Ends October 20. Here Is How to Read the Ending Before Season 2
Mokumokuren is ending The Summer Hikaru Died with chapter 51 on October 20, 2026. Season 2 has no release date. If you only watch the anime, you are about to spend a year or more avoiding spoilers for a story that will already be finished. Here is how to read the ending instead.
The official account announced it on September 1: two chapters left. Chapter 50 on October 13, chapter 51 on October 20, and thatâs the end of a series that has been running on Kadokawaâs Young Ace UP site since August 2021.
Itâs a strange spot to be in as an anime viewer. Season 1 aired July to September 2025 on Nippon TV and Netflix, twelve episodes, and CygamesPictures made it look like nothing else that year. Season 2 got confirmed the moment the finale credits rolled. Then nothing. No date, no window, no trailer. Studios of that caliber usually need twelve to eighteen months of real production time, so most people are quietly penciling in 2027.
Meanwhile the manga finishes next month.
Where the manga is right now, and where to pick up
Season 1 ends inside chapter 26. The anime trims the last stretch of it, so you miss a small beat, but nothing that matters.
Start at chapter 27. Thatâs the first chapter of volume 6, and it lines up almost exactly with where episode 12 leaves Yoshiki and the thing wearing Hikaruâs face.
From there it runs to chapter 51. So the anime-only viewer is sitting twenty-five chapters behind a story that is about to have an ending.
One thing that trips people up: both the Japanese site and the English release split single chapters into numbered parts. Youâll see things like chapter 49-1, 49-2, 49-3. Those are three pieces of one chapter, not three chapters. It makes the count look bigger than it is.
Where to read The Summer Hikaru Died legally
There are three official routes, and theyâre at very different points in the story.
- Yen Press volumes (English). Nine volumes exist in Japan. Yen Press is up to volume 8, out October 27, 2026. Good books, gorgeous print, but the volume line trails the serialized chapters by the better part of two volumes, so this route will not get you the ending this year.
- Yen Press digital chapters (English). This is the one most people donât know about. Yen Press simulpubs the series chapter by chapter in English at $1.99 a chapter, and itâs currently sitting around chapter 49. If you read English and want the finale on release week, this is the legal way to get it.
- Young Ace UP and ComicWalker (Japanese). Kadokawa publishes the chapters free on its own sites, Young Ace UP and ComicWalker. This is the original, it updates first, and it costs nothing.
If you read English, the middle option is genuinely the answer, and weâd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
What if you donât read English?
Then the picture changes completely.
Yen Press licenses this series for English. Thatâs it. Thereâs no official Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Arabic, Thai or Filipino simulpub running alongside it, and a horror manga this popular has readers in all of those places. For most of them the choice has been waiting on a local print license that may be years out, or nothing.
Which is a shame, because the raw chapters are already free and official on Kadokawaâs own site. The words are the only wall.
Reading the raw chapters with AI translation
Madomi is a manga translator that works as a browser extension on Chrome and Firefox, and as a native app on Android and iOS. Open any raw manga chapter, activate Madomi, and it reads the Japanese text inside every speech bubble using OCR built for manga fonts, then overlays the translation in your language as you scroll.
Itâs rated 4.8 out of 5 from 270+ Chrome Web Store ratings, with 10,000+ active users, the highest-rated manga translator extension. You get free credits every month (1 credit per translated image), and Madomi Premium removes the limit.
For this series the workflow is about as clean as it gets. Open the chapter on Young Ace UP or ComicWalker in your browser, turn on Madomi, and read it in your language the same day it publishes in Japan. No scan sites, no waiting, and Kadokawa gets the page view. If youâve followed our guides for reading Korean manhwa without knowing any Korean or reading Chinese manhua in English, itâs the same idea pointed at a Japanese publisherâs own website. We used the same approach for reading the Witch Hat Atelier manga ahead of the anime.
How far ahead of the anime does this put you?
Quite far, and the gap is about to stop growing:
- Anime: 12 episodes, ending inside chapter 26.
- Manga: finishing at chapter 51 on October 20, 2026.
- The gap: 25 chapters, or roughly volumes 6 through 10.
- Season 2: confirmed, undated, widely expected in 2027. Season 1 averaged a little over two chapters an episode, so a second twelve-episode run could plausibly take the story all the way to chapter 51 and finish it.
Which is the good news and the bad news at once. Season 2 may well adapt the ending, but nobody has even given it a window, so the earliest realistic answer is somewhere in 2027. The manga answers it on October 20.
Quick start guide

- Open the manga at chapter 27, volume 6.
- Reading in English? Buy the Yen Press digital chapters and youâll be current in a couple of evenings.
- Reading in anything else? Open the chapters free on Young Ace UP or ComicWalker and turn on Madomi to translate each page as you scroll.
- Mark October 13 and October 20. Those are chapters 50 and 51.
Frequently asked questions
When does The Summer Hikaru Died manga end? Chapter 51 is the final chapter, publishing October 20, 2026. Chapter 50 arrives October 13.
Where does the anime leave off? Partway through chapter 26. Start at chapter 27, the first chapter of volume 6.
How many volumes are there? Nine in Japan as of volume 9 on June 4, 2026, which collected chapters 42 through 46.5. The remaining chapters should make a tenth and final volume, though Kadokawa hasnât dated it yet. Yen Press is at volume 8 in English, out October 27, 2026.
Is the anime getting a second season? Yes. It was announced on September 27, 2025, immediately after episode 12 aired, with CygamesPictures returning. No date has been given.
Can I read it in a language other than English? Not officially, no. Yen Press holds the English license and thereâs no simulpub in other languages, so the free Japanese chapters plus Madomi is the practical route.
Is it worth reading the manga if I loved the anime? The back half is where the series stops being a slow dread piece and starts paying things off. The anime adapted the setup. The ending is the part nobody has animated yet.
Do Not Let Someone Else Tell You How It Ends
A finale this anticipated leaks into every timeline you use within hours. You will not dodge it for two years. The chapters are already there, legally, and the only thing standing between you and the last page is a language you can now read straight through.
